***This fabric is for our Indigenous customers***
We were very, very apprehensive about carrying these fabrics and the only reason we carry them at all is because we were asked to by so many Indigenous people within the community. We had many people asking why we didn't carry anything for them. So we had discussions with customers over about a year long period, including some lovely folks from the Indigenous program at Laurentian University and decided to do it.
Keep in mind that all of our First Nations Prints are designed by non-Indigenous people. We are working on finding a source for fabric that is affordable for customers and designed by Indigenous folks. We've written fabric and pattern companies about this before, sizeism and racism with their products. We'd love to hear from you if you have a suggestion from where we can source these (shoot us an email at sewlocalsudbury@gmail.com).
We would love to get a bunch of people to write/message these fabric companies demanding they have actual Indigenous people designing their 'native prints' as they call them.
Elizabeth's Studio's fabric collection titled 'Native Spirit' does not have any information about who designed it, leading us to believe it's made by a white designer. Their contact info is here
Robert Kaufman's fabric collection titled 'Native Heritage' appears to be designed by Kate Ward Thacker who is a white woman. Robert Kaufman's contact info is here
